چکیده

The results of three series of rocket measurements of mesospheric electric ®elds carried out under di€erent geomagnetic conditions at polar and high middle latitudes are analysed. The measurements show a clear dependence of the vertical electric ®elds on geomagnetic activity at polar and high middle latitudes. The vertical electric ®elds in the lower mesosphere increase with the increase of geomagnetic indexes Kp and P Kp. The simultaneous increase of the vertical electric ®eld strength and ion conductivity was observed in the mesosphere during geomagnetic disturbances. This striking phenomenon was displayed most clearly during the solar proton events of October, 1989 accompanied by very strong geomagnetic storm …Kp ˆ 8‡†. A possible mechanism of generation of the vertical electric ®elds in the mesosphere caused by gravitational sedimentation of charged aerosol particles is discussed. Simultaneous existence in the mesosphere of both the negative and positive multiply charged aerosol particles of di€erent sizes is assumed for explanation of the observed V/m vertical electric ®elds and their behaviour under geomagnetically disturbed conditions.

The 27 day solar rotational effect on mesospheric nighttime OH and O3 observations induced by geomagnetic activity

Observations performed by the Earth Observing System Microwave Limb Sounder instrument on board the Aura satellite from 2004 to 2009 (2004 to 2014) were used to investigate the 27 day solar rotational cycle in mesospheric OH (O3) and the physical connection to geomagnetic activity. Data analysis was focused on nighttime measurements at geomagnetic latitudes connected to the outer radiation belt...

Method of auxiliary sources for calculating the magnetic and electric )elds induced in a layered Earth

Time varying ionospheric currents caused by geomagnetic storms originating from the Sun induce electric currents in expansive technological networks located on the Earth’s surface. These so-called geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) can be damaging to the systems in which they 9ow. The ability to estimate the magnitude of GICs is, therefore, desirable in order to mitigate any serious e:ects...

Midday reversal of equatorial ionospheric electric ®eld

A comparative study of the geomagnetic and ionospheric data at equatorial and low-latitude stations in India over the 20 year period 1956±1975 is described. The reversal of the electric ®eld in the ionosphere over the magnetic equator during the midday hours indicated by the disappearance of the equatorial sporadic E region echoes on the ionograms is a rare phenomenon occurring on about 1% of t...

On calculating the electric and magnetic elds produced in technological systems at the Earth’s surface by a “wide” electrojet

Forecasting the geomagnetic e ects to technological systems on the ground requires rapid calculations of the electric and magnetic elds produced by the auroral electrojet. The electrojet is often modelled as a line current at a height of 100 km, but in reality it has a nite width and is typically spread over 5◦ or 6◦ of latitude. We show that the width of the electrojet can easily be included i...

Physical mechanism of strong negative storm eects in the daytime ionospheric F2 region observed with EISCAT

A self-consistent method for daytime F-region modelling was applied to EISCAT observations during two periods comprising the very disturbed days 3 April 1992 and 10 April 1990. The observed strong Ne decrease at F2-layer heights originated from di€erent physical mechanisms in the two cases. The negative F2layer storm e€ect with an NmF2 decrease by a factor of 6.4 on 3 April 1992 was produced by...
